9:55 minutes (5.68 MB)

In a recent telecouse, when I was asked "What Is Integral Life Practice?" I found it possible to answer without jargon, in a way that gets at the essence of what ILP offers ANY person interested in a full, conscious life of growth and learning. Just 10 minutes gets across the essence!

Finding Your "Yes"

I'm writing this in the spacious stillness of Thanksgiving weekend. My life has been moving at high speed, but over this holiday break an opening appeared. The phone barely rang, and a sense of deep peace naturally blossomed. My heart has been overflowing with spontaneous gratitude (or as Brother David Steindl-Rast so beautifully puts it, "great-full-ness".)

I'm grateful for many things—family and friends, my spiritual friends and communities, some inspiring creative projects, amazing partners, and my growing, vibrant communities of integral evolutionary spirituality and service. I'm especially grateful for the opportunity to serve humankind, and our current intensifying wild ride through what is certainly a kind of evolutionary whitewater rafting.

There are many ways of talking about spirituality, but all authentic spirituality has at its core a profound and life-changing experience that is beyond all categories and conventional modes of speech.

Integral Heart Newsletter #1: Exploring Big Questions in the Integral World

This, the first in my series of monthly newsletters, is written as an open letter from The Crossings, a retreat center near Austin, where the Integral Leadership in Action (ILiA) conference has just concluded.

Tomorrow my wife Deborah and I set out for Perpignan, France, where I've been asked to serve as the Master of Ceremonies at Renaissance2: The Great Shift Gathering, a "network of world-changing networks" that aims to catalyze a whole series of high-impact practical projects in the fields of renewable energy, enlightened enterprise, integral governance, and resilient environments.

Integral Agency-in-Communion

Although some individuals, organizations and worldviews privilege either agency or communion over the other, the Integral disposition fully embraces both.

I chose the URL and identity of this website, "Integral Heart," in part to emphasize the healthy communion that is a natural expression of healthy Integral agency.

Structures of awareness always have special strengths and weaknesses. Since Integral consciousness has evolved so recently, there's no research yet that clearly identifies its tendencies towards limitations and pathologies. But most structures differentiate themselves from the previous one via a somewhat exaggerated reaction.

Some theorists suggest that the early indications are that Teal (the earliest Integral structure) can tend to give excessive weight to its mental maps and models—as powerful as they are—and lose some connection to the embodied, intuitive aspects of awareness that were cultivated at Green. It appears that some healthy, positive aspects of Green can be temporarily suppressed at Teal, as the self attempts to wrap its mind around a radically larger and deeper sense of reality.

With Integral discrimination, we can see much more clearly why every perspective is partial, and thus we can critique every point of view with a whole new level of penetrating insight.

It is just as true and real that with Integral vision, we can see much more clearly how every perspective is uniquely and valuably true, and thus we can appreciate the whole world with a whole new level of honoring embrace. This extends and deepens in Turquoise, the second level of Integral awareness, which evolves beyond Teal.  Read more »

The 3 Faces of Spirit

Spirit can be experienced in at least 3 fundamental ways, which correspond to the 3 perspectives inherent in natural language: as a 1st-person "I," as a 2nd-person "Thou," or as a 3rd-person "It."

Each perspective on and of Spirit reveals a distinct, and equally true, good, and beautiful "face" of the Ultimate. A full and rich relationship to Spirit will thus necessarily comprise each of these 3 faces, even while Spirit, in its radical depth and mystery, ultimately goes beyond any and all perspectives.

Integral Ethics

6:27 minutes (2.96 MB)

Ethics is an essential dimension of Integral practice—and for many good reasons. We act ethically in order to live in a society where everyone is encouraged to obey some important common rules. Ethics is an expression of enlightened self-interest—we act ethically in order to steer clear of negative karmas. A sense of expanded identity can inspire ethical behavior. Ethics is also a container for higher consciousness. Even if you can see through "dream" of samsara, ethics keeps the dream from becoming a nightmare. Finally ethics is how we take adult responsibility for a world that seems run by "adolescents with guns."
